Me and little me

Me and Little Me

Jump up and grab the branch
swing your legs in the air
wrap them around the limb
hoist yourself up and around
you’re secure

We sit, side by side
reading Encyclopedia Brown
solving the case

We sit, side by side
watching a gray squirrel
dart back and forth across the yard

We sit, side by side
watching the wind blow leaves
red, yellow, orange, brown

We sit, side by side
listening to the songs
of the cicada

We sit, side by side
in Gram’s tree
supporting each other

We sit, side by side
welcomed, valued,
unconditionally loved

We sit, side by side
a hug, a thoughtful glance
we’re safe here, together

We sit, side by side
to tremble and cry,
and share the pain

We sit, side by side
in silence
that’s all we need right now

little me doesn’t exist
but she is real
and she lives inside of me
