It&#8217;s quiet. It&#8217;s peaceful. If you sit quietly anywhere, you can hear the birds and the crickets. If you&#8217;re there on the right day, you might hear elk or see bighorn sheep.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I went for a hike with my friend, Jen, who is relatively new to the Scottsbluff area. We hiked a little over five miles in total.<\/p>\n<p>This is our adventure, or mis-adventure if you&#8217;ve ever hiked with me.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3322\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-01-1O8A1898.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3322\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-01-1O8A1898.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As Jen and I traveled toward the road to Cedar Canyon, I stopped to check out the road. I got out of the car, walked around and said, &#8220;Yeah, we can make it.&#8221; I should never listen to myself because we spent the next 45 minutes getting my Toyota Yaris out of this mess.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3323\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-02-1O8A1935.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3323\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-02-1O8A1935-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"943\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We decided to walk the roughly one mile into Cedar Canyon WMA. I parked my car in a safe place on the side of the road and we headed in for our hike. This is what the side of the road looks like. I&#8217;d say this is more rain damage than from the fire <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralradio.com\/kneb-tv\/news\/3-homes-lost-7-damaged-as-carter-canyon-fire-reaches-13000-acres\/\">last year<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3324\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-03-1O8A1939.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3324\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-03-1O8A1939.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"419\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There is no way I could have driven my car safely into Cedar Canyon WMA. We have had above average rainfall this year, so my unscientific view says this is a combination of the fires last year and rainfall.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3325\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-04-1O8A1952.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3325\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3325\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-04-1O8A1952.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the awesome things about my hike was all the life I saw, big and small.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3326\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-05-1O8A1955.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3326\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-05-1O8A1955.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"505\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We came across this guy near the side of the trail. Jen walked by and said, &#8220;Rattlesnake,&#8221; and kept on walking. Yeah, like I wasn&#8217;t going to go back and take a picture.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3327\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-06-1O8A1963.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3327\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3327\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-06-1O8A1963.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"419\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I walked around to the front of the snake and took a picture. As soon as I bent down to get onto its level, the snake lifted its head. I stood up and took a step back. It was then I could see its rattle. Jen and I waited to see what it was going to do. There was no shaking of the rattle. It headed back into the tall prairie grass. We did not attempt to follow.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3328\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-07-1O8A1970.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3328\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-07-1O8A1970.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"488\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This looked cool, so I took a picture of it.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3329\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-08-1O8A1974.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3329\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-08-1O8A1974.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cedar Canyon WMA is bouncing back quite nicely. I have hiked in that area that is full of water. I don&#8217;t recall a time when water has been in that depression.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3330\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-09-1O8A1991.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3330\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-09-1O8A1991.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The right side of the trail here are all exposed roots. I am standing on the left side of the trail as I took this picture. We decided it was best to turn back because you can&#8217;t safely check for rattlesnakes in this terrain.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3334\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-13-1O8A2097.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3334\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/jen-13-1O8A2097.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"463\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Again, this looked cool, so I took a picture of it. He eventually chewed off a piece and then in the hole he went. We let some fresh air in, as well as flies. My car didn&#8217;t fair too badly in its duel with the mud. Jen, who is Lakota, told me that turtles are a sign of protection. So I went to do a little research when I came home.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nativehope.org\/sioux-native-americans-their-history-culture-and-traditions\">Native Hope<\/a>, \u201cThe turtle (keya) is another sacred creature among Native American tribes. Each tribe&#8217;s cultural view of the turtle\/tortoise is slightly different. For the Lakota and other tribes, the turtle represents grandmother earth (unci maka), who teaches all to walk in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In most places I read, the turtle represents good health and a long life.
