The name stuck. Each year, thousands of people are drawn to western Nebraska to see the unique landscape known as Toadstool Geologic Park.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1999\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/02-toadstool-DSC_0906.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1999\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/02-toadstool-DSC_0906-678x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"950\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1999\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toadstool Geologic Park is the result of a river that flowed in the area over 30 million years ago. Weathering from wind and water created its current appearance. Volcanic ash from the West Coast was deposited here. Reddish layers in the rock were deposited during wet seasons, greenish layers during dry seasons.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2000\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/03-toadstool-DSC_0723.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2000\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/03-toadstool-DSC_0723-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"416\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The toadstools are created by the forces of wind and water, eroding the soft clay faster than the hard sandstone rock that caps it.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2001\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/04-toadstool-DSC_0703.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2001\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/04-toadstool-DSC_0703-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"416\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Horizontal bands in the rock layers can be clearly seen at Toadstool Geologic Park.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2002\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/05-toadstool-DSC_0743.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2002\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/05-toadstool-DSC_0743-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"416\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toadstool Geologic Park is a key link in understanding the earth as it was 38 to 24 million years ago. The park is important in the study of Geology because it is considered the standard for animal fossils from the Eocene and Oligocene epochs. All similar-aged White River Group deposits in North America are compared to Toadstool.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1989\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/06-toadstool-DSC_0772.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1989\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/06-toadstool-DSC_0772-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"416\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As the rock cliff is undercut by erosion, overhanging rocks break off. No one can predict when the next break will occur, so view the cliffs from a safe distance.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1990\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/07-toadstool-DSC_0765.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1990\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irenenorth.com\/writings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/07-toadstool-DSC_0765-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"416\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In addition to viewing the unique landscape, toadstool offers a chance to view ancient trackways of rhinoceros, entelodonts &#8211;
