It was the first thing I had written to be published.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ellis Island<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The beds lie in<br \/>\nSoldier rows<br \/>\nten by five<br \/>\nSteel frames that are<br \/>\nmore of a home<br \/>\nto roaches<\/p>\n<p>Paint peels off<br \/>\nand rust<br \/>\ncorrodes the springs<br \/>\nmattresses full<br \/>\nof lice<br \/>\nand<br \/>\nrats<br \/>\nburrowing in<\/p>\n<p>The beds are pushed<br \/>\nagainst walls<br \/>\nwhere paint chips<br \/>\nfall<\/p>\n<p>No sheet<br \/>\nno blanket<br \/>\njust a pillow<br \/>\nto rest a<br \/>\nweary head<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This poem was published in the anthology &#8220;A Sea of Treasures&#8221; in 1995.
